How to Stay Productive While Working from Home: Essential Tips for Small Business Owners

If you work from home, you likely appreciate the numerous benefits it offers. Things like flexibility, avoiding traffic, and skipping the lunch packing routine are some of the perks that come to mind. However, there are also challenges to contend with. Many struggle to stay productive outside of a traditional office environment. But with a few good habits, you can transform your home into a highly productive workspace. Here are some tips to help you stay on track if you're feeling less productive and want to make the most of your workday.

Create a Dedicated Workspace

Are you the type to park yourself in one place all day or do you move around to get a little change in your remote day scenery? If you can't stand the idea of sitting in the same place all day, maybe its because you haven't taken the time to create a spot that you ENJOY being in. Even if you don't have the space for a fancy office, find an area that you can devote to work and make it cozy! Get a good chair, have all of your supplies organized and within reach and add a few personal touches.

Establish a Routine

While a routine can seem monotonous, sticking to one is key when it comes to productivity. If you start your day the same each morning, you can ensure a consistent schedule which allows your brain get into a groove. Adding in breaks to your day is also crucial. Breaks allow more focused work, meaning you'll be able to crank thinks out faster.

Set Clear Goals... Daily!

Make sure you always have a clear picture of what your top priorities for the day are. This might involve taking a few minutes at the start of your day to identify where you left off yesterday and a few minutes at the end to check back in. Whether you use a paper to-do list or an app, having daily goals will help you fly through those tasks.

Minimize Distractions

Distractions are tricky, especially at home! You are always being reminded of other things around the house that need to be done, and this can make focusing on work difficult. Try to identify what is pulling your attention away from work and take active steps to avoid that distraction. Shut a door, set the laundry bin somewhere else, etc. Just a few tweaks can go a long way when it comes to shutting out distractions.

Stay Connected

It may seem counterintuitive, but the lack of people to interact with can sometimes contribute to productivity slumps. Keeping in touch with others virtually is important, so be sure to prioritize regular video calls and other ways to reduce any feelings of isolation you may experience during your work day.

Practice Self-Care

Sometimes working remotely means we forget about self-care. While there are many ways in which working from home can help make time for self-care we need to ensure that we're still taking advantage of the time and flexibility it allows. Add in some breaks for meditation, set timers to remind yourself to stand and walk. Whatever you need to do to keep your stress at bay, be sure to do it!

Even if you incorporate just a FEW of these tips, you should start to experience a more productive and enjoyable work-from-home day. Remember, the key is finding what works best for you and continuing to make modifications until you hit the sweet spot. Now, go out there and make things happen this week!
