Small Business Copywriting - Do it Yourself or Hire it Out?

Good copywriting can take your business to the next level. Using words show a deep understanding of your target customer creates an emotional connection, providing a great opportunity to stand out among your competitors. However, if your words don’t properly rea your customer, you may be letting valuable business slip through your fingers.

Many business owners choose to write their own copy. After all, who knows your business better than you do? But when does it make more sense to hire this task out? And if you do, how can you know that the professional you’re paying to highlight your business will be able to do it as effectively as you can?

The Power of Effective Copy

Copywriting, by definition, uses written word for the purpose of persuading someone to take action. It’s the language your business uses in all communication.

Your business copy includes web text, digital products, email campaigns, Facebook ads, and video scripts and much more. So, as a business operating today, you really can’t avoid it.

Because of the demands that many business owners face, it's common that copywriting falls low on your marketing priority list, but it truly is one of the most essential aspects of marketing.

In today’s digital world, there are fewer ways to stand out, making “microcopy” or small bits of text, such as a call-to-action in a Facebook advertisement or the subject line of an email, incredibly important.

According to copyblogger.com, 8 out of 10 searchers will read headline copy before clicking a post, but only 2 out of 10 will actually read the post. This means that people are heavily influenced by what they are able to summarize from what their eyes catch while skimming.

When to Invest in Professional Copywriting

When a client feels strongly that they want to craft their own copy, I ask them these three questions to help determine whether they should continue using their valuable time to create their own copy or if hiring this service out makes the most sense:

  1. Do you have enough time in your day to produce quality copy?

  2. Can you create quality copy consistently? (Are you able plan copy ahead if your week gets busy?)

  3. Have you seen increased engagement since you started writing your own copy? (increased email subscribers, Instagram followers, etc.?)

If the answer to any of these questions is a big NO, then looking to outsource this work might be in your best interest. Think about the time that you could be saving...

We now offer copywriting services to meet all of your business needs!

Our copywriter, Paige, is a graduate from the University of Iowa’s school of journalism and mass communication where she learned the art of writing for a digital audience and how to shape content to meet the needs of a target customer. She has experience writing in wide variety of formats and is passionate about helping businesses succeed in reaching their customers through their written work.

Our Unique Copywriting Approach

Here's our process for taking your copy to the next level:

1.) Initial Meeting

In the initial meeting, we discuss your business’s vision and how the copy will work to take on the brand voice of your customer. We will dive deep into what motivates your customer (what are their goals, hopes, dreams and pain points?) and then we will create an approach to tie back your copy to them depending on the platform.

2.) Creating Outlines

Then, we will work together to create content categories and content outlines that will provide value to your customer and keep them informed about your business. These outlines can be updated as frequently as you’d like.

3.) The Draft Process

Once we’ve finalized your outlines, you will receive copy drafts where you tell us what needs to be altered and what you’d like to add. This step allows you to make the copy your own, without having to spend the time creating the entire piece yourself.

4.) Final Revisions

Following the revisions to your draft, you will receive the final copy and have another opportunity to make last minute revisions before the content goes live.
